Interesting offering from Google.

Google Sync allows you to synchronize the contacts and calendar on your phone with your Google account. Still in beta (as always) but it is definitely a good alternative to a paid service although I can’t vouch for reliability as yet since I haven’t tried it out yet. The app allows one to:-
        •        Synchronize your Contacts with Google
        •        Depending on your phone, get Google Calendar events to your phone
        •        Make changes either on your phone or on the Web

Works with:
iPhone
BlackBerry
Nokia S60
Nokia standard
Sony Ericsson
Windows Mobile

Note that carrier charges will apply.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Google Sync uses the Microsoft© Exchange ActiveSync© protocol. When setting up a new Exchange ActiveSync account on your iPhone, all existing Contacts and Calendar events will be removed from your phone. Please make sure to back up any important data before you set up Google Sync.

I found this article on the Ririan Project page. Good stuff. I think a lot of us need to re-assess ourselves and think about our work habits and how we feel when we are at work. Yes we are in control. We just need to kick back and remind ourselves that we are.

#1) HEALTHY BODY
Wake up one hour early, and prepare your body for work. Hours are spent with hygiene and wardrobe, but the actually physical body is often forgotten in the morning routine. Just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise will get blood flowing, create energy, boost metabolism, and loosen up the body. This is especially important if you have a desk job, or job where you spend a lot of time cooped up in a car.

#2) HEALTHY MIND
Take the other 30 minutes (from the early wake up above) to get the mind healthy. Yoga, meditation, prayer, reflection, etc.. what ever works best to clear your mind of personal stressors.

#3) EAT A BALANCED DIET
Eat energy rich-low fat foods. Fat makes you tired and sluggish; which makes you ill and unhappy. Do not skip breakfast and lunch. It doesn’t matter how busy the day gets, take time to get away from work and eat. This provides you with just enough time to replenish energy levels and refocus.

#4) ADD A PERSONAL ELEMENT
Most employees will have some place that they can put a personal picture, pot plant, knickknack, etc.. Not only will this make you feel more at ease in the work environment, but it will help you to remember the good things in life. If you do not have an area to call your own, dedicate a special piece of jewelry, that can serve as a happy reminder.

#5) DON’T SWEAT THE UNIMPORTANT STUFF
Of course, the know it all “tail wagging-suck up” gal next to you is aggravating. However, unless you have the authority to fire her, you are stuck with her. Why let anyone else effect your sanity. Just nod ,and block her diarrhea of the mouth out. Likewise, if a customer is throwing a fit because of a policy that you do not have control over, do not take their insults personally. You will be a much happier person if you realize that you can not sweat the stuff that you can’t change.

#6) DO NOT EXPECT PERSONAL RECOGNITION
Most bosses and customers are not going to specifically recognize you for your accomplishments. However, they are going to jump on the slightest err. My husband still can not comprehend this. He is always complaining about how unappreciated he is at work. Well, your appreciation, recognition, pat on the back, etc.. is your pay check. If you are getting a pay check, then you can assume you are doing something right. When you expect to be to told “thank you for putting in those extra 20 hours of work this week,” you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Continue to work hard, and your payoff will be promotions, raises, and personal advancement; which is of much greater value than a pat on the back.

#7) BE POSITIVE
Okay, I know that it is trite and is often a hard feat. However, the “can do attitude” leads to success. In addition to a positive attitude, you should surround yourself with positive people. Also, avoid gossip and complaining.

#8) BE KNOWLEDGEABLE
What ever your job is, you should make it a priority to know as much as you can about the job, field, company, industry, etc.. This should include the legalities related to the ethics of your profession or license. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t do will give you a greater peace of mind in performing job duties. A person constantly on edge is never happy.

#9) ORGANIZATION
Keep your area clean and organized. This will cut a tremendous amount of stress out of your life. Thereby, making you a happier person.

#10) TAKE YOUR BREAKS
Every employee is entitled (by law) to two- 15 min breaks in an 8 hr shift. It is easy to grow weary and aggravated, if you do not take the time to “reset.”

Project Gutenberg
Free eBooks
Wowio

And finally Stanza an eBook reader for Windows, Macs and iPods. Have fun this weekend reading.

Google Gears out for Safari Tuesday, 16 September, 2008

Google Gears is officially released for Safari today. I haven?t had the chance to try it out yet but I am a little wary of installing third party stuff into Safari. I have had numerous crashes with Safari in the past but as always, I will still try it out and see how well it works.

For those who are not in the know, the introduction of Google Gears into Safari means that you can now access all the Gears-enabled sites (such as Zoho office, WordPress, the new YouTube uploader and Google Docs offline) in Safari. On that aspect alone, this is something Mac users have been lacking from the Windows dominated world and it is a welcome.

On a personal thought, this whole thing is really starting to look at the way how Google is poised to take over the world, sneaking in from behind with software module by module. At the rate things are going, I will not be surprised that within the next 5 to 10 years, none of us may be using Linux, Mac or Windows OSs. I doubt it but hey, it could happen.

I chanced upon a rather interesting site. If you ever have need to find that elusive operating manual for some electronic product you bought yonks ago you can try your luck at Diplodocs. A site devoted to archiving manuals of audio equipment, cameras, mobile phones etc. Personally I do not have a need to download anything yet but I am bookmarking this site on my browser for one of those ?just-in-case? days.

Check it out here.

Google Web Toolkit aka Google’s New Browser? Tuesday, 2 September, 2008

I am not going into technicalities for this post. But the general idea is that Google’s web toolkit could be the precursor of the rumored Google OS. At this point in time, casual users should steer clear of this for the moment. Downloading and extracting the toolkit gives you a folder of files which you will will need to run the toolkit. To get started, jump here. An in-depth tutorial to keep you going here.

If you are a little clueless as to what to do after your extract the files, I suggest you steer clear of this until the product is ready for mass circulation.

Some interesting points to note for the Toolkit:-
- Communicate with your server through really simple RPC
- Optimize the JavaScript script downloads based on user profile
- Reuse UI components across projects
- Use other JavaScript libraries and native JavaScript code-
- Easily support the browser’s back button and history
- Localize applications efficiently
- Be productive with your choice of development tools
- Test your code with JUnit

To cut a long story short, you can use the Toolkit to build applications from the command line utility called applicationCreator. Very cool stuff.

Back to the real world for me now…..

BTW, the “official” browser may be released as early as today or tomorrow.

New site by Microsoft Live Labs (everyone seems to love using the ?Labs? bit these days). Photosynth is a photo sharing website with a difference. Photosynth has the ability to reconstruct a scene or object from a group of flat photographs and give the viewer an experience unlike nothing before, or so the blurb says. Personally I have not had the time to check it out yet. Please leave comments on this if you do before me.

Start by creating your own synth after the jump

Photoshop Express Friday, 1 August, 2008

Quite sometime ago, I mentioned a little about Adobe’s Photoshop Express.

Well it has been awhile since I last checked the site out and it seems to be shaping up pretty nicely despite it still being in beta. PE is essentially a web-based image management application and editor.

If you so happen to be one of those who do not use Photoshop professionally or own a legit copy but would still like to use some of the basic tools offered in the original Photoshop app, this may be something you might like to try.

However, Photoshop veterans would probably not bother too much about the online tools since it is barely a fifth of the actual Photoshop’s features but what you need to correct exposure, adjust saturation and hues, remove red-eye and the usual crop and rotate are all here.

So give it a go. It may be a good alternative to Flickr.

What’s Cuil? Thursday, 31 July, 2008

Cuil (pronounced Cool), a new search engine by ex-Google staffers has just been released. Promising a different search “experience” with Drill-downs, Roll-Over Definitions, Tabs and Suggestions, it’s a slightly different approach to what most of us are used to.

I have tried it out and so far my reaction has been mixed. The stuff that I’d expected to find did not show up on top of the list but I must say I got several interesting hits in the process. As for the searching of images, I haven’t quite figured out if there is an option for it or how to go about it.

My first reaction: Use it more as an complement with whatever Search engine you’re using. More on this when I have the time to scope out its features.
