Nokia Netbook? Monday, 24 August, 2009

Here’s a new one. And who knows, if the operating system is on the right track, it may give some of the existing netbooks out there a run for their money.
The Nokia 3G Booklet is based on the Intel Atom platform with n HDMI HD video output. Boasting a battery life of up to 12 hours it is going to make a lot of heads turn. As it is tagged with the word “3G” you can expect the Nokia 3G Booklet to come with an integrated 3G/HSDPA modem as well as Wi-Fi and A-GPS, and we all know where this is going since Nokia is already in the mix with the Nokia Maps application. Complete with a 10-inch screen and only 20mm in thickness this is one drool-worthy piece of hardware. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that it weighs 1.25kg and there’s a front-facing video camera and Bluetooth?

A new version of Blackberry’s Desktop software will be released in September that offers Mac syncing. This means, Mac users can now sync their iTunes playlists, and personal information from iCal and Address Book. To put it simply, you can now manage your Blackberry on a Mac. How cool is that? Now this little bit of morsel makes me want to consider getting one. And to tease us Mac users, Blackberry will be releasing the Curve 8250 around the same time which offers full Mac compatibility.

Reports are coming in about the malicious “Curse of Silence” SMS message that renders your Nokia S60 3rd Edition (Initial or Feature Pack 1) phone incapable of receiving new SMS messages once activated.
The folks at Nokia have issued a SMS Cleaner for this. You can get it here if your phone is affected.

I think I am going to get blasted for what I am about to say by the fanboys but then again, I feel that I have a valid point, so I will make this short sweet and simple….
Motorola – Start doing something original. Make phones that make us want to own one of yours again. Your losses are hitting the billions. An over-priced phone such as the Aura can only appeal to so many people. No Wi-Fi, 3G and a mere 2mp camera? Even the rich would want a mobile with better specs. You can start by looking around and see what the other phone manufacturers are doing. Keep with the times. Hire industrial designers with some proper design sense.
Samsung – Upping the megapixel count isn’t innovation. Rumor has it that a soon to be 12mp camera phone is coming. Do we really need it? Packing in more and more photo-sensitive dots onto teensy weensy chips is just going to give people noisy, low quality images with huge file sizes. So even if you up the megapixel count and retain a low level Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensor, it will not do the megapixel count justice.
Sony Ericsson – You used to make great cellphones that are easy to use with designs that rock. Why in the world did you decide to use Windows Mobile on the Xperia X1? Save for your highy touted X1 Panels, it is still a Windows Mobile device under the hood. So what if UIQ is dead, there are better platforms out there (I don’t need to name them). Didn’t it ever occur to you that the on-screen controls can get to be very small when the OS is running at such a high resolution on a 3.1″ widescreen display?
At least the Palm Pre is doing something else for a change

This is probably old news by now, but for the benefit of friends out there who do not know about this…
Two strains of Trojan Horses for the Mac, notably – OSX.Trojan.iServices.A and OSX.Trojan.iServices.B have been found embedded in pirated versions of iLife ‘09, iWork ‘09 and Photoshop CS4. The malware obtains root privileges, and notifies the remote host of the infected computers location on the Internet. Found installed in the startup items folders ( /System/Library/StartupItems/iWorkServices ) the trojan connects to a remote server notifying it of the infected computers location on the net awaiting further instruction including the ability of downloading additional components.
Just to be on the safe side (you know what I mean now, don’t you), you can get a removal tool from SecureMac.

For some of you Mac users who are still not in-the-know, Nokia Europe has released an iSync plug-in for the Music Express 5800. Sweet. Looks like now is the time for us Mac users to get one if you have been considering the 5800 as an alternative to the iPhone.

Why I Held Out from Buying the iPhone Friday, 3 October, 2008

No, I am not am Apple hater and neither am I someone that buys a gadget or anything just because it is the flavor of the month. Even since the iPhone launch in this country, I have seen that many people flicking and sliding their fingers on their shiny new toy…. um, ok communication, entertainment and productivity device.
But I am quite disappointed with Apple’s refusal to not have the “proper” iTunes Music Store available in the country I am residing in.
What do most people here do? They rip music, movies and everything else in between for their iPods. Legit and otherwise. Apple already knows that content is king. And I know that there are a lot of legalities when it comes to the distribution of music from country to country. Bureaucratic red tape bullsh*t more like it if you ask me.
By teaming up with a local telco and not freeing the iPhone as a regular electronic consumer device that can be sold in legit Apple Stores and Resellers again restricts viability for those who are still tied to a plan with the other telco. We want the iPhone. We want to be liberated like your 1984 ad promises. But we do not want to be held hostage by some big ass company who bleeds us dry every time a data connection is made.
With just these two points in mind, ignore the 3G connectivity issues, the poor battery life and the meager 2 megapixel camera. There are folks out there who would still want to own the iPhone. And buying from the black market or parallel importers seems like the only way for now.
Wake up Apple. Nokia’s Xpress 5800 aka The Tube is here and it is looking mighty tempting especially now that the Nokia’s Music Store is is or will be available in most countries that Nokia has a presence in. So the Symbian experience is not as good as the iPhone but give them time and the dice can roll to their favor.
I can probably buy the 5800 off a phone retailer and with a price point that is way way lower than an iPhone, the temptation of getting one suddenly becomes that much higher. So the audio is not as good as the iPhone and there is no App store equivalent but I still believe that if Nokia is serious on taking Apple head-on, they can and they will. And the first step to the take down is coming up with Mac compatibility to their PC Suite, wireless updating and better connectivity to all Macs and I am sure there will be a bunch of us who would not mind going over to the other side for awhile.
I haven’t even begun with Google’s Android and I won’t for now but reports have come in and even though it may not be a game changer as yet give it till the next version, I am sure it will raise a few eyebrows by then.
Apple needs to realize that their days of loyal, die-hard mac fanboys and fanatics who will pledge their very lives and souls to the company are over. People have more choices now. People cannot afford to pay for tech as much as they would like to anymore.
Do something. Selling millions of iPhones is not a good indicator of success if better alternatives come along. And they will.

I chanced upon this recently whilst looking for some photoshop plug-ins. Not exactly what commercial plug-ins can offer but some of the stuff in here are worth a look especially if you use photoshop more as a hobbyist than for professional use.

N82 Firmware Upgrade to v30.0.019 Tuesday, 16 September, 2008

European Nokia N82 owners has just received a firmware upgrade to v30.0.019. At this point, I still can’t get my mitts on the changelog but from what I know, only Euro1 product codes units apply. Any one with any clue as to when the rest of the world will get the update will be appreciated.
One more thing, Active Notes users may NOT want to upgrade just yet. Active Notes does not work on the N78 with firmware version 12.046 which is bascially S603rdFP2. I should know. I tried. I am not that Symbian-savvy so I can’t vouch for Active Notes until I get the update and try it out myself.
