Cuil (pronounced Cool), a new search engine by ex-Google staffers has just been released. Promising a different search “experience” with Drill-downs, Roll-Over Definitions, Tabs and Suggestions, it’s a slightly different approach to what most of us are used to.
I have tried it out and so far my reaction has been mixed. The stuff that I’d expected to find did not show up on top of the list but I must say I got several interesting hits in the process. As for the searching of images, I haven’t quite figured out if there is an option for it or how to go about it.
My first reaction: Use it more as an complement with whatever Search engine you’re using. More on this when I have the time to scope out its features.

Robert E Howard’s Red Sonja is set for a refresh with Robert Rodriguez as producer (I was kind of hoping that he will be directing) and Douglas Aarniokoski as Director. Rose McGowan will star as the red haired heroine. No firm release date as yet but slated sometime in 2009. From the looks of it I?d wager either for Christmas or even a 2010 release.
Whether the movie will suck or end up a cult favorite, it is still Rose McGowan in a metal bikini. And that alone is worth the ticket price. No official website link yet.
Speaking of which, keep your peeps out for the upcoming Tekken movie (currently in post production) starring Luke Goss as Steve Fox and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Heihachi Mishima. As with most video game to movie franchises, I am a little skeptical even if the movie promises some “high octane” R-Rated action, I still have my reservations. I don’t see a lot of hype going around with this one so far.

Casio G’zOne Tuesday, 29 July, 2008

I really like what Casio is doing. Rather than following the “it” crowd and coming up with another possible “iPhone” killer like the rest of the chain gang, they have concentrated their efforts on a demographic that has been more or less ignored by most other cell phone makers other than Nokia. I am talking about the Casio G’zOne. The G-Shock of mobile phones.
It is a pity that it is currently available only to Verizon users so if you are outside the US, you might have a little problem getting your paws on this.
We?re looking at G-Shock technology as the shell of the phone, comes with a flashlight, electronic compass, 1.3 Mp Camera (bummer), bluetooth, speech recognition, speakerphone, basic PIM, a music player and a microSD slot.
Great for the outdoors or if you’re like me who is constantly on the road under mud, rain and dirty conditions, this is one tough phone to consider.
Punisher: Warzone – Comic Con Trailer Monday, 28 July, 2008

Check out the intense Punisher: Warzone trailer from Comic Con 08 courtesy of IGN.com.
If the movie is as good as it looks, this could be THE Punisher movie and we are all in for one hell of a ride. We’re talking about total GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm) in this movie. The first movie with Thomas Jane was pretty good but it didn’t quite capture the raw gritty darkness of the Punisher character. I am not faulting the man’s portrayal, in fact he plays a very believable Frank Castle.
However, I felt that the script had too much “emotional elements” taking way too much screen time showing the anguish Frank Castle is going through rather than the violence that is The Punisher. Warzone, could be closer to the comic than an examination into the psychological ramifications of the Punisher slant towards crime from the first movie. In fact, I felt that the first was more of an “origins” movie. This one had better have the raw action and the hardware. And from what I have seen of Ray Stevenson’s performance in the trailer I don’t think it will disappoint.
Just please, don’t let it suck.

Has Black Metal gone the way of pop stars? Gorgoroth singer Gaahl (a.k.a. Kristian Espedal) is said to be starting a line of women?s fashion apparel with modeling agent Dan DeVero! Like what gives? Are we talking pastel shades and lace here? I am very flummoxed. Shocked even.
And Nic Cage’s ex is getting married to Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath? Well, ok the man is a regular guy just like the rest of us so I’ll give him that. But seriously, if these guys start doing “When You Wish Upon a Star” I’m outta here.

The full trailer is now available online via IGN.COM. You can either view it online or download the clip. And from the looks of it, it is going to be awesome. Somehow, after 3 live action movies, one would expect Mila Jovovich in this one, but it is a whole new slant and it does bring a refreshing breath of fresh air to the storyline.
MobileMe-ssed Up Friday, 25 July, 2008

Apple had better do something soon about MobileMe. It is slowly turning into a Mobile Me-ss.
I am having problems logging in today. What is going on out there? From the time MobileMe was launched till today, it looks set to destroy Apple?s famed user experience. This is not looking good for you Apple.
I am having a very frustrating time trying to sync my MobileMe account with everything else this morning. It just WON’T sync! I am definitely NOT a happy camper today. I did, however managed to get MobileMe to sync on my fifth attempt after lunch. I know syncing is tricky business, but when you get calendars and documents being spirited away to limbo and contact details disappearing it is definitely a cause for worry.
If I am just an ordinary home user who does not need data critically, I don’t really care about the occasional outages. But as a business user, I need information updated constantly and accurately. MobileMe is just not doing a good job. If MobileMe isn’t ready when the iPhone 3G rolled out, DO NOT release it and give paid users like us a phobia of clicking the sync button.
Why should we pay for something that don’t quite work when there are so many workarounds out there that does a better job for a lower price tag if at all free! Paying customers expect a certain level of commitment. This is not the way to go Apple.
I have never ever had a bad user experience with Apple. I had problems with Wi-Fi connectivity recently but did I cuss my head off? No. I found a work-around solution as I knew this couldn’t be Apple’s fault. I believed in Apple’s software. I believed in Apple’s hardware. Well, after MobileMe-ss Up, I am thinking twice.
Apple, are you going the way of the world’s biggest software manufacturer as well? Has money gotten into your head so much that you have forgotten about the loyal Mac users who stuck by you since 1984? I get the impression would seem that Apple is now keen only to answer to its shareholders and bow to the perennial dollar. Loyal Mac Users made Apple what it is today. Don’t forget that, Apple.
Since I am on the subject, I took a few minutes off to take stock of every single Apple computer I owned and it is an eye-opener (well at least for me):-
The Apple computers I owned and still love
- Apple IIe
- Apple IIc
- Apple IIgs
- Macintosh – 128k
- Macintosh SE/30
- Macintosh Powerbook 170
- Macintosh LC
- Macintosh Quadra 700
- Macintosh Performa 450
- Macintosh PowerMac 7100/66
- Macintosh PowerBook 3400/200
- iMac DV Special Edition
- iBook G4
- MacBook
The Apple product I am starting to hate:-
- MobileMe
One last note. After writing this, I chanced upon David Pogue’s article on MobileMe. Looks like everyone’s coining the MobileMess term as well. Google it and you’ll see what I mean. I am definitely not one of the few with the same sentiments. By the way, Pogue’s article is brilliant. Please read it. I don?t think anyone could have expressed it any better.
Apple, are you listening yet?

How d’you do, I see you’ve met my faithful handyman
He’s just a little brought down because when you knocked
He thought you were the candyman.
Don’t get strung out by the way that I look,
Don’t judge a book by its cover
I’m not much of a man by the light of day,
But by night I’m one hell of a lover
I’m just a Sweet Transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania
A new 2 hour remake by MTV of the cult favorite, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is about to become reality. The original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien will be used (oh yeah). Hopefully, there will be some costume updates and the music bumped up a couple of notches. If they get it right, it is going to be awesome. But don’t expect it to come this Halloween. No cast has been announced yet.

WASP Injector Knife Thursday, 24 July, 2008

The WASP Injector Knife takes weaponry to new levels. Imagine an ordinary looking hand knife equipped with a surgical stainless steel blade and a compartment in the handle that holds a gas cartridge. When released, the cartridge releases 800 psi of cold compress air the size of a basketball after you stab your intended prey. Oh heck, why am I describing this when you can see it for yourself? Check out the video of the knife in action with a watermelon.
Um seriously, I don’t like this. If this weapon so happens to fall into the wrong hands……..
